The project addresses housing and food insecurities faced by the Bangladeshi community on Commercial Road in East London. Through a community kitchen, vertical farm, social housing and self-built rammed earth construction, the project aims to repair local socio-economic and ecological disparities while empowering residents through community engagement and material localism.
The proposed building sits adjacent to The George Tavern, an existing pub on Commercial Road.
Using the existing Stepney's Nightclub building as a key material resource, the proposal incrementally grows in plan through self-built rammed earth construction.
A short section through the proposed building shows the housing, community kitchen and food growing elements of the programme.
The development of the building tectonic relied on iterative rammed earth construction mockup testing which investigated socio-technical community engagement and material localism.
The interior views of the proposed building are framed by the self-built rammed earth structure which informs commensal and convivial experiences for users.
