The Fabricated Forest : Advancing Finnish Timber Techniques

Project details

Programme
Unit PG23
Year 5

This proposal is for a museum that will facilitate the restoration and preservation of Finnish timber structures and construction methods within the Seurassari Open-Air Museum in Helsinki, Finland. The Finnish log construction technique has been employed as a longstanding way of house construction in Finland for millennia, forming the foundation of the entire history of Finnish architecture. Nevertheless, due to the advent of standardised timber mass production, some saunas and summer cottages made with traditional Finnish log construction techniques have been abandoned throughout the Finnish forest. The project physically hosts abandoned Finnish timber structures and fragments of buildings to restore and preserve Finland's log architectural heritage. The main structure is a log, and one of them is made of glulam reclaimed timber logs to demonstrate the possibilities of reusing timber waste. This attempt would increase the value of the demolition material by reusing secondary timber structures into primary structural components for use in new buildings. Applying the glulam bending timber structure for exterior and roof structures creates an innovative structural relationship.

Glulam-bending timber can be more resource-efficient and structurally effective than cutting it. Thanks to this technique, the wood circulation economy (CE) value can also be increased by turning reclaimed timber into structural glulam log forms.

The project is on a coastline between the ocean, granite coasts, and forests. Helsinki's natural scenery varies depending on the location within the museum. This is intended to provide the opportunity to enjoy nature at any time.

The experimental design for the structure is implemented by mixing all six of Finland’s representative log forms with the glulam reclaimed timber log. The museum provides an innovative structural format to explore its combinations simultaneously.

Glulam bending timber structures provide a significant benefit in terms of their adaptability in shape. Additionally, they possess a visual attractiveness and maintain a sense of gracefulness even while covering significant distances.
